Aluminum Manufacturer Allegedly Knew It Was Selling Faulty Parts To NASA, Resulting In Two Failed Launches

A joint investigation conducted by NASA and the US Department of Justice (DOJ) found an aluminum manufacturing company guilty of altering test results and providing false certifications for 19 years, resulting in two failed Taurus XL launches as part of the 2009 Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OC) and 2011 Glory missions. The Oregon-based company has agreed to pay over $46 million to customers, including the United States government, in connection with the falsification scheme in order to resolve criminal charges and civil claims relating to nearly two decades of fraud. “For nearly 20 years, Sapa Profiles and Sapa Extrusions falsified critical tests on the aluminum they sold – tests that their customers, including the U.S. government, depended on to ensure the reliability of …

How 3 women learned to feel like themselves again after surviving cancer.

Everything looks different after a cancer diagnosis, and that difference only continues once a patient enters remission. Photo by Frank Busch on Flickr. The illness and treatment for the illness affect how a person looks and feels, and those changes can last for years if not forever. At first, you’re so focused on surviving that looks are an afterthought. But once your appearance begins to change, it can affect you as deeply as the cancer itself. As a result, feelings about one’s outward appearance become complicated and difficult to navigate. But with the help of family, friends, and a few professionals (plus a lot of internal fortitude), it can get easier. We asked cancer survivors how they embraced their new …

Feel like your vacations aren’t as fabulous as your friends’? This study is for you.

People love to talk about their amazing vacations, but research shows that many of them are lying. Ever feel like those Instagram and Facebook posts of picture-perfect places and epically awesome experiences may not be telling the whole story? You’re probably right. Research conducted by flight-comparison site JetCost.com found that a good portion of Americans are blatantly dishonest about their vacations. Of 4000 people surveyed, a full two-thirds admitted to lying about some aspect of their trips, mostly about weather, accommodations, and the number of attractions they visited, TravelPulse reported. About a quarter of Americans also lied about the amount of alcohol they consumed, and 21% lied about how much money they spent while traveling. In perhaps the most telling …

Fatal Attraction killer Carolyn Warmus granted parole, may be released from prison in June

Carolyn Warmus, a former New York schoolteacher who was convicted of killing Betty Jeanne Solomon in 1992, has been granted parole and could be released from prison as early as June 10. Higher Learning: in praise of John Singleton’s forgotten masterwork

The late writer-directors 1995 college-set drama was met with a lukewarm reception on release but, looking back, its themes were eerily prescient I am a black man in America. I have so much angst. So thats what Im going to write about, said then-26-year-old John Singleton to who died this week at 51, slumped in his chair, eyes shining under his wireless frames. Noted for his trailblazing, Oscar-nominated Boyz N the Hood, Higher Learning, he explained, would show his growth as a screenwriter and director. He hoped it would reinvent him. Because unlike his previous films, Higher Learning was not about him. It was much larger. Higher Learning was about America. His most prescient work, Higher Learning reflected the misgivings …

Trump warns presidency is being stolen amid Mueller angst

(CNN)Donald Trump — warning that his presidency is being stolen — sure seems threatened by Robert Mueller — especially considering his declaration that the special counsel handed him “complete and total exoneration.” The President spent months shaping the aftermath of the Russia investigation, so clearly he has no desire to see his narrative contradicted by Mueller breaking his public silence. That’s especially the case since it emerged last week that Mueller wrote to William Barr to register concern about the attorney general’s public presentation of his work — that clearly favored Trump — in a letter to Congress in March. “Despite the tremendous success that I have had as President, including perhaps the greatest ECONOMY and most successful first two …

Woody Allen Reportedly Can’t Get Anyone To Publish His Memoir

Woody Allen, the writer-director now eschewed by most of Hollywood, has been unsuccessfully pitching a memoir to major publishing houses for the last year, a New York Times report found Thursday. UK Government Becomes First To Declare Climate Change A National Emergency

In what must have been a welcome respite from the saga that is Brexit, the British government became the very first in the world to declare climate change a national emergency, following a call from opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn.  The decision was made after actions by the Welsh and Scottish governments, who declared their own climate change national emergencies earlier this week. Various UK towns and cities, including London, Edinburgh, Bristol, and Manchester, have made similar announcements in a bid to put pressure on Parliament. Michael Gove, the environment secretary, told audiences on Tuesday that “We [the government] recognize the situation we face is an emergency, it is a crisis, it is a threat that all of us have to unite to …

Arsenals Lacazette-Aubameyang double act puts Valencia on back foot

Alexandre Lacazette scored two and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang a crucial late third as Arsenal came from behind to beat Valencia 3-1 in their Europa League semi-final first leg What a difference a week makes. Arsenal rediscovered their verve to give themselves a tantalising chance of reaching the Europa League final in Baku at the end of May. Attack has to be their best form of defence and their two shining lights up front delivered to give them a 3-1 advantage to take to the Mestalla next week. What a difference a late goal makes, too. Going into stoppage time they were entitled to feel fretful about a 2-1 lead, a scoreline that felt fraught with danger going into an away leg. …

Are We Done Being Extra? Betches

Last night, not one, but TWO celebrities announced their pregnancies: Blake Lively, at the New York City premiere of Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, and Keira Knightley, at a Chanel cocktail party in Paris (très chic). Now, what was surprising about both of these pregnancy announcements was just that—they weren’t really announcements at all. There was not some big press conference or statement released, not even an Instagram of a sonogram with a long caption. It was just “Here I am, and oh btw, I am carrying a child.” I love it. In a time where we are inundated with celebrity “news,” when everything from a double tap on an Instagram post to an airport outfit spawns headline after headline, this non-announcement announcement is …

This Mormon valedictorian came out to 10,000 people in a stirring graduation speech.

On Friday, April 25th, Matthew Easton gave a commencement speech at Brigham Young University to 10,000 people that included a rather unexpected declaration: he came out as gay.   “I stand before my family, friends and graduating class today to say that I am proud to be a gay son of God,” he said. His words were immediately met with deafening cheers from people in the audience, including his sister, who momentarily dropped the phone she was using to record his speech in her excitement. “Four years ago, it would have been impossible for me to imagine that I would come out to my entire college,” he continued in the speech. “It is a phenomenal feeling. And it is a …
