The White House Correspondents’ Association 2019 dinner will not feature a comedian for the first time in 16 years after the group was engulfed in controversy over comedian Michelle Wolf’s 2018 performance.

Ron Chernow, the famed biographer of Alexander Hamilton, will be the featured speaker at the 2019 dinner on April 27, the association said Monday. Chernow wrote the 2004 biography of Hamilton that spawned the eponymous Broadway musical.

“The White House Correspondents’ Association has asked me to make the case for the First Amendment and I am happy to oblige,” Chernow said in a statement issued by the correspondents’ association. “Freedom of the press is always a timely subject and this seems like the perfect moment to go back to basics. My major worry these days is that we Americans will forget who we are as a people and historians should serve as our chief custodians in preserving that rich storehouse of memory.”

The group’s annual dinner, a glittery and chummy tradition joining the worlds of politics and journalism, has spotlighted a comedian for the past 15 years, according to its list of previous speakers.

The 2018 dinner incited condemnation over Wolf’s criticism of Trump administration officials, particularly White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Then-association president Margaret Talev said at the time that Wolf’s performance was not “unifying” and was “not in the spirit” of the group’s mission.

Many in the media argued that Wolf was being lambasted even though she was doing what she was hired to do, raising questions about the whole point of the White House Correspondents’ dinner.

Wolf responded to the Association’s choice of speaker this year, calling the organization “cowards” in a tweet and adding, “The media is complicit.”

The last time the association eschewed a comedian was in 2003, when then-President George W. Bush decided to forgo comedy given the recent invasion of Iraq. That year, the dinner featured Ray Charles.

Prior to Wolf, comedians like Jay Leno, Cedric the Entertainer, Rich Little, Craig Ferguson, Wanda Sykes, Larry Wilmore, Cecily Strong, Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers and Stephen Colbert made appearances.

Chernow promised his history lesson at the 2019 dinner “won’t be dry.”

“I’m delighted that Ron will share his lively, deeply researched perspectives on American politics and history at the 2019 White House Correspondents’ Dinner,” Olivier Knox, president of the WHCA and SiriusXM’s chief Washington correspondent, said in the association’s statement.

For the last several months, Knox had been “leaning against inviting a comic, and he had been conferring with other members about the change,” according to CNN

Trump skipped the dinner in 2017 and 2018. Perhaps 2019 will be different for him, too.

JELL-O Finally Did It – Edible Slime! – Perez Hiltonhttps://instaviral.pw/jell-o-finally-did-it-edible-slime-perez-hilton/ Tue, 20 Nov 2018 13:58:20 +0000 https://instaviral.pw/?p=232

Fun for kids of all ages? Or a pandemic waiting to happen??

After years of people sharing homemade recipes for their best versions of slime you could both play with and eat — to VERY mixed results — Jell-O itself has finally risen to the challenge.

With the introduction of Edible Slime, the company has made that gooey, icky ooze kids love to play with something they can put in their bodies after!

The experimental product releases officially in December — just in time for a stocking stuffer — and comes in two flavors: Monster (lime) and Unicorn (strawberry).

But is it going to be a viral hit? Or a virus incubator?

We mean, it’s going to pick up every single particulate on the hands, any surface it touches. Is it just asking for trouble??

What do YOU think, Perezcious parents and players??

UK slammed for not granting asylum to Pakistani Christian Asia Bibi over security fearshttps://instaviral.pw/uk-slammed-for-not-granting-asylum-to-pakistani-christian-asia-bibi-over-security-fears/ Tue, 20 Nov 2018 09:38:07 +0000 https://instaviral.pw/?p=229

In his letter of resignation to British Prime Minister Theresa May last week, the Conservative Party's now-former vice chairman Rehman Chishti emphasized that one of his reasons for stepping down was the "manner in which the Government has dealt with the case regarding Asia Bibi."

"This is a case that I have worked on passionately since 2012 ... to ensure that justice is done which was handed down by the Pakistan Supreme Court only recently," he wrote. "What I found shocking, is that the British Government is failing to put into practice the core values that our country stands for; religious freedom, justice, morally doing the right thing, and that when we see injustice where an individual’s life is in clear danger and they have been persecuted for their faith, we do all we can to help them."

In Chishti’s view, “the government should not wait to see if another country offers sanctuary, we should have had the conviction to lead on this matter and offer sanctuary ourselves straight away.”

The UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth office did not respond to a request for comment.

Amid the turmoil, the Pakistani government has moved Bibi and her family from the jail they had been using as a safe house to an undisclosed secure location.

“Many speculate that Asia and her family have been moved to a military facility near Islamabad, but this has not been confirmed. It seems that the government is currently negotiating when Asia will leave Pakistan and where she will be granted asylum,” said Stark. “The lives of Asia and her family are absolutely in danger. If released to the public, it is very likely that religious fanatics would attempt to kill Asia and her family. Even within the secure facility provided by the government, Asia’s life could be in danger.”

Chowdhry said what is most disturbing about the ongoing situation is videos that have emerged showing children play-acting at hanging Bibi.

Asia Bibi, an impoverished minority Christian, was sentenced to death in 2010 after Muslim neighbors accused her of drinking from a contaminated a water jug, an offense viewed as blasphemy.

“The charges against Bibi were always based on mob mania against blasphemy. There was never anything to the charges as the Supreme Court noted,” contended David Curry, president and CEO of Christian persecution watchdog, Open Doors USA. “The protests are not surprising, but it is disappointing the Pakistani government hasn’t moved swiftly to get her to safety. It is not clear to me why any free society wouldn’t see fit to accept her. She has been the victim of a terrible injustice.”

Asia’s blasphemy case has remained one of the most rousing religious issues in Pakistan for nearly a decade and has led to at least two high profile political assassinations. Salman Taseer, then governor of Punjab, was assassinated by his elite bodyguard who was influenced by religious fanatics.

“A similar assassination could be possible if Asia remains in Pakistan too long,” Stark warned.

Among Pakistan’s leadership, the matter also remains contentious. One Pakistan official conveyed some frustration at the situation as an example of the government purporting to do the right thing but being drawn into the fanatic rule.

PAKISTAN OPEN TO AFRIDI TALKS WITH US, FOREIGN MINISTER SAYS

In a call with Antonio Tajani, the President of the European Parliament on the matter last week, newly-installed Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan reportedly doubled-down on the government’s resolve to respect the judgment of the Supreme Court and insisted that Bibi and her family are entitled to all rights. He is also reported to have expressed “serious concern” about the issue of blasphemy abroad and accentuated the need for European countries to “avoid such provocative incidents.”

Adnan Khan, Chairman of the U.S-based Council of Pakistan insisted that – contrary to reports – the Pakistan government has indeed “come down very hard on all protesters and the Islamist parties” and resolved that no new charges would be brought against Bibi.

According to the 2018 Open Doors World Watch List, Pakistan was the fifth most difficult country to live in as a Christian, trailing only Sudan, Somalia, Afghanistan and North Korea.

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry did not respond to a request for comment. However, in a statement earlier this month, the ministry denied reports that Bibi was banned from departing Pakistan and insisted she “is free to leave the country.”

Even if Bibi could sneak out unscathed, to date she has nowhere to officially go. However, several sources tell Fox News that multiple countries, including the U.S., are working to ensure her safe exit from Pakistan.

“We have been liaising with diplomats from a number of countries. In regards to the U.S., as we understand it America is working with many countries to ensure Asia Bibi’s safety and the family’s ultimate asylum in the West,” Chowdhry added. “But in the meantime, Asia Bibi is under the auspices of a Pakistani security detail – we hope that an international security detail can assume these responsibilities.”

A State Department spokesperson could not comment on the matter but referred to a press conference in which officials reiterated their position that “religious freedom is universal,” and that the Bibi case has been closely followed.

Only the worse may be yet to come.

“It is highly likely that we will see additional protests when it is announced that Asia has been allowed to leave Pakistan and seek asylum,” Stark added. “But the important thing now is to keep the pressure on Pakistan to allow Asia and her family to seek asylum outside of the country. The Pakistani government will be under significant pressure from domestic extremists to reverse Asia’s acquittal and execute her."

Bloomberg donates record $1.8B to Johns Hopkinshttps://instaviral.pw/bloomberg-donates-record-1-8b-to-johns-hopkins/ Tue, 20 Nov 2018 05:14:09 +0000 https://instaviral.pw/?p=226

(CNN)Michael Bloomberg, the former New York mayor who is weighing a 2020 presidential run, is donating $1.8 billion to his alma mater, Johns Hopkins.

The gift will fund financial aid for qualified low- and middle-income students, allowing the university to forever make admissions decisions on a "need-blind" basis — without considering an applicant's ability to pay, according to the press release.
The contribution also eliminates student loans from financial aid packages, replacing those loans with grants that don't need to be repaid. The change will ease the burden of student debt for many graduates and make the campus more socioeconomically diverse, Bloomberg wrote in a New York Times op-ed in which he explains his rationale for the gift and the impact it will have.
"America is at its best when we reward people based on the quality of their work, not the size of their pocketbook," he wrote.
Improving access to top colleges and universities for students who can't afford it has long been a focus of Bloomberg's philanthropic efforts. Bloomberg's foundation supports several programs dedicated to helping high-achieving, lower-income students apply to, enroll in and graduate from top institutions.
"This changes everything for us," said Ronald J. Daniels, the president of Johns Hopkins University, in an interview with CNN. Without Bloomberg's support, it was a "real struggle" for the school to meet its commitment to "need-blind" admissions, said Daniels.
Compared to its top 10 peers, Johns Hopkins had one of the lowest endowed funds for student financial aid and one of the smallest average need-based awards, making it increasingly difficult for families to afford the university, according to the press release.
Excluding the Johns Hopkins donation, Bloomberg has donated $6.4 billion to philanthropic causes ranging from climate change to improving health. The university is a significant beneficiary of Bloomberg's giving, having received $1.5 billion in previous years to support research, teaching and financial aid.
Potential opponents in 2020 would have to consider Bloomberg's wealth, which Forbes estimates to be $46 billion, and his willingness to spend it. The businessman contributed over $110 million in an effort to wrest control of the House and Senate from Republicans.
Bloomberg's political spending and his appearance in a national TV ad earlier this month, urging voters to support Democrats raised his profile outside of New York, where he's well known after serving three terms as mayor.
Bloomberg embarked on a political career after building a financial information and news empire Bloomberg L.P. In the New York Times op-ed, Bloomberg says his Johns Hopkins "diploma opened up doors that otherwise would have been closed, and allowed me to live the American dream."

          The Boring Company goes brick-and-mortar with The Brick Storehttps://instaviral.pw/the-boring-company-goes-brick-and-mortar-with-the-brick-store/ Mon, 19 Nov 2018 22:55:23 +0000 https://instaviral.pw/?p=223

          Elon Musk has

The new company, which was founded in July, will be managed by Steve Davis, the ex-SpaceX engineer who is also running The Boring Company (TBC).

TBC is developing new tunneling and transportation technologies, and the bricks will be made from soil displaced by the company’s tunnel-boring machines. Elon Musk has tweeted that the bricks could cost as little as 10 cents each, and might even be given away to affordable housing projects.

The Brick Store’s first physical outlet will be a far cry from Tesla’s sleek, designer showrooms. Planning documents submitted to Hawthorne, a city in southwestern Los Angeles County, show a rundown stucco building about a mile from TBC and SpaceX’s headquarters. Forbidding black steel security grilles “will be utilized … to accent the entrances and windows,” TBC wrote in its application to repaint the building.

Despite these design flourishes, TBC did not select the building for its aesthetic appeal. The building — formerly housing a kitchen cabinet business — is located above an exit tunnel that TBC is digging to extract the boring machine from its first test tunnel. This is intended to showcase Loop, a proposed underground transportation system carrying people or cars on self-contained electric skates traveling at up to 150 miles per hour.

The tunnel was originally planned to stretch around two miles under public roads from a parking structure next to SpaceX. However, in April this year, TBC used a subsidiary to quietly buy the Hawthorne corner lot, which sits about halfway along the planned route, for $2 million.

In July, TBC asked Hawthorne for permission to use that lot to build an access shaft to extract its tunnel-boring machine, which, because it cannot move backwards, would otherwise have been abandoned at the end of the excavation.

The same month, Musk founded The Brick Store, whose purpose, according to state filings, is the “manufacture and sale of bricks.” TBC has already produced some structures from bricks made from tunnel spoil, and Musk tweeted yesterday that they would be used to build a watchtower at the entrance to the tunnel.

Turning tunnel waste into a valuable commodity fits in with Musk’s environmental leanings — and will save TBC from the cost of disposing all that dirt. TBC has even suggested that the bricks could potentially be used as part of the tunnel lining itself. Musk has previously said that the tunnel would officially open on December 10.

TBC did not immediately respond to requests for comment on this story.

Bricks made from everyday soil, usually called compressed earth blocks (CEB), date back to ancient times. CEBs are still used in developing countries today, and are part of building codes in California and New Mexico. But even there, the market for them is tiny — possibly because CEB buildings can be awkward to build, wire and insulate. BC has even suggested that the bricks could potentially be used as part of the tunnel lining itself.

Dwell Earth sells machines that produce CEBs by applying pressure to a mixture of earth and a little cement.

“Elon seems to have a way of bringing energy and talent to big challenges, and we are happy to see that he may be as excited about [CEBs] as we are,” Dwell Earths founder Bob de Jong told TechCrunch.

          The

TBC received around $112 million from Musk earlier this year. These funds will be used to build a number of tunnels around the country, including a Loop to connect Dodger Stadium to the subway in L.A., one that would link Chicago and O’Hare airport, as well as an ambitious commuter Loop between Washington, D.C. and Maryland.

These projects could be thwarted, or at least delayed, because of an increasingly heated trade war between the U.S. and China.

TBC lawyers wrote to the United States Trade Representative in July that the tariffs imposed by President Trump on Chinese-tunneling machine parts, among other products, would delay its projects by up to two years and mean lost job opportunities. The company asked for an exemption from the tariffs that has not yet been granted.

If there’s anyone who can re-brand dirt and build a market for CEBs, it’s Elon Musk. But even if The Brick Store’s bricks don’t raise enough money for a Mars mission or save the planet, at least they are a little more practical than a novelty “not a flamethrower.”
