Scientists Turn Type A Blood Into Universal Donor Blood

Around 117 million pints of blood are donated each year across the world. While that sounds like lake-loads of blood, incompatibility between blood types – the main ones being A, B, AB, and O – means that a transfusion isn’t always straightforward. Type O, however, is compatible with anyone who has Rhesus (Rh) positive blood, so is deemed a “universal” blood type as it can be freely accepted by anyone with A+, B+, AB+, or O+, which is three-quarters of the world’s population. Now, a new study has shown how enzymes can be used to covert A type red blood cells to “universal” donor O type blood cells. While the science is still in its early days, it has the potential to pave the …

New Study Answers Whether People Have “A Type When Looking For Love

You’ve no doubt had an experience where a friend introduces you to a new love interest and you’re faced with a doppelgänger of their not-so-pleasant ex: they have the same presence, the same interests, the same sense of humor. You’re pretty sure they even have the same shoes on. Rest assured, your gut feeling might not be too far from wrong. A new study has found that most people appear to have a “type” when it comes to dating, as reported in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Plenty of previous studies have looked at this phenomenon in terms of physical appearance and social background, but this research took a deep look at core personality traits across partners. Using …

Ireland ‘unwise’ to pick a fight over fishing

It is an eroded volcano that lies 260 miles (418km) west of the Western Isles and is only 100ft (30m) wide and 70ft (21m) high above the sea. ‘Very unwise’ The UK claimed Rockall in 1955, but Ireland, Iceland and Denmark have previously challenged that claim. The row between Scotland and Ireland broke out after increased activity from Irish vessels around Rockall and the Scottish government has said it will take “enforcement action” against Irish vessels found fishing within 12 miles of Rockall from Saturday. Mr Armstrong told the BBC the SFF was behind the move. Image caption Bertie Armstrong from the SFF believes it is a black-and-white case of illegality A spokeswoman from the Scottish government said: “Irish vessels …

All aboard the Bob Dylan express! How Rolling Thunder revved round America

When Dylan chanced upon a huge Roma gathering in France, he was transfixed and formed his own travelling supergroup. As Martin Scorsese brings its ragtag magic to screens, we hitch a ride back to 75 In May 1975, his marriage breaking up, Bob Dylan spent six weeks in the south of France. His host, an artist named David Oppenheim, had recently provided a painting for the back cover of Blood on the Tracks, an album of seemingly confessional songs that had taken Dylan back to the top of the charts. Critics acclaimed its songs as evidence that, after almost a decade of straying from the straight and narrow, he was prepared once again to bare his soul. But Dylan, as …

Dominic Wilcox “I was challenged by Microsoft Surface to think up some everyday problems and come up with some interesting or extraordinary solutions,” Dominic told Bored Panda. “It was for an exhibition in London in May. A few weeks earlier, I was at a gig standing near the back and I noticed a small woman dancing behind me who clearly couldn’t see the band because of all the tall people around. This gave me the idea to try to solve that problem. Also, I think we’ve all been at the cinema and someone big sits in front and blocks the view, this device could help, as long as you don’t block the view of the person behind you!” Dominic Wilcox …

Newly Discovered Pacific Hydrothermal Vents Hint At How Life Might Evolve On Other Ocean Worlds

A newly discovered abnormal hydrothermal vent discovered 120 kilometers (75 miles) off the west coast of America could help researchers find life on oceanic worlds beyond our own. Systematic Underwater Biogeochemical Science and Exploration Analog (SUBSEA), a collaborative partnership with NASA, NOAA, and the Ocean Exploration Trust, announced the discovery of the Apollo Vent Field found at Gorda Ridge, an underwater volcanic zone around 2,700 meters (8,900 feet) below the surface of the ocean. It’s believed that this area shares key characteristics with other ocean planets, and could help us understand the conditions that might make microbial life possible here.   Researchers found the novel field by looking at high-resolution bathymetry data of Sea Cliff, another hydrothermal field in the …

Gwyneth Paltrow Doesn’t Live With Her Husband, And We’re All For It Betches

reports, “Interestingly, she and [her husband] don’t live together yet, though he is close by. He sleeps at his own house when his children, Brody and Isabella, stay; on the other four nights he’s chez Paltrow.” So why don’t the lovebirds—she the founder of the lifestyle brand exclusively targeted at the .03% and he the co-creator of TV’s most terrifying shows, and —live together? I imagine it’s because every piece of furniture in her home is white and her OCD starts to act up when too many people breathe on it. But contrary to my theory, Gwyneth has no shame in revealing the real reason and I have to say, I’m about it.  . I think the reason Gwenyth’s admission …

Image caption Marie and the location of her cannabis oil operation need to remain anonymous In response, some people have been going to countries such as the Netherlands to get medical cannabis on prescription while others have turned to the black market. Experts warn this is a bad idea because their products are not pharmaceutical grade. They say there can be a “very real danger” because users do not know exactly what is in the dealer’s products. The family I met in Scotland felt they had a black market dealer who actually wanted to help people – that was Marie. Image caption The …

Why Did ‘Big Little Lies’ Change Its Coffee Shop In Season 2?

If you were looking to spill the tea in Season 1 of “,” the best place to go was the local coffee shop ― Blue Blues Cafe, in Monterey, California. An Increase In UV Light May Have Contributed To The Extinction Of The Neanderthals, Study Suggests

Homo neanderthalensis is an extinct species of archaic humans that lived in Eurasia until roughly 40,000 years ago. The cause of their extinction is an ongoing matter of debate. Now a new study has suggested that the weakening of Earth’s magnetic field may have been what pushed them over the edge. The magnetic field of our planet protects us directly from the solar wind, high-energy particles that flow outward from the Sun, and indirectly from the Sun’s ultraviolet light (UV). The ozone layer, our shield against the UV, is susceptible to high-energy particles (among other things) so a period of lower magnetic field strength could lead to a thinning of the ozone layer, allowing more UV to reach the surface. As …

Politico: Pelosi told Dems she wants Trump ‘in prison’

Washington (CNN)House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told Democrats pushing for an impeachment effort that rather than wanting to see President Donald Trump impeached, she wanted to see him “in prison,” Politico reported. Pelosi has previously accused Trump of engaging in a “cover-up” over special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, but her reported remarks are an escalation from her public rhetoric. Last month, she said, “we believe that no one is above the law, including the president of the United States.” She has repeatedly rebuffed Democrats’ desires to begin an impeachment inquiry, saying the issue is “divisive” and instead calling for Democrats to continue investigating Trump. On Wednesday, she said she was “not feeling any pressure” …
