The name “Piers Morgan” is synonymous with controversy.
The outspoken television host is famous for his aggravated rants on air which have insulted practically every demographic. With little people left to offend, Morgan is now infuriating transgender people (again) with his latest interview, in which he tastelessly interrogates Caitlyn Jenner about her gender reassignment surgery. Jenner, who had previously lived as the Olympic gold-medalist Bruce, shocked the world when she came out as a trans woman in 2015. “For all intents and purposes, I’m a woman,” she said, whilst explaining how she’d lived with gender dysmorphia since her youth. After years of cross-dressing, and a brief period of taking hormone replacement therapy, Jenner finally revealed her true self in a now infamous and explosive interview with Vanity Fair. Jenner’s transition left fans of Keeping Up With The Kardashians stunned, especially considering her past as a celebrated athlete, which often meant she was lauded for her enviable masculine frame. Instantly the world had questions for the reality star, who has turned relatively secretive since separating herself from the Kardashian family, where her two children, Kendall and Kylie, continue to thrive. However, nobody could have more questions for the former Olympian than the outspoken journalist and television personality Piers Morgan. The scandalous British star couldn’t wait to delve into Jenner’s story. The 52-year-old journalist recently had his chance when Jenner agreed to appear on his show, Piers Morgan Life Stories, which is known for its cold open approach to interviewing stars. However, Jenner quickly regretted her decision when Morgan began to bombard her with some peculiar questions… The interview takes a tumultuous turn when an unashamed Morgan reaches for a toy doll, modeled on Jenner before her gender assignment surgery, which she underwent in January 2017. Unperturbed by the discomfort on Jenner’s face, Morgan asks: “You were an all-American, six-foot-two-inch muscle-bound guy. When you look at that guy what do you think?” Trying to remain professional, Jenner simply replies: “Good for him. There is a lot more to this story than just that.” Dissatisfied with the 68-year-old stars response, Morgan continues on the same tact: “How does your physique compare now to what it did then? Obviously, certain areas we know about…” This question appears to ignite the fire within Jenner as she prepares to answer the offensive question. “You made a comment there and that’s why you would get in trouble, ok? You said ‘certain areas’ – that, to a trans-person, is disrespectful,” she said. After asking why his question was hurtful, Jenner went on to say:
“It’s not funny. It’s life. It’s a very serious part of my life. I take that very seriously and so out of respect to myself and the community, it’s not something that you joke about. This is serious stuff. People die over these issues. It’s not a joke.”
Clearly apologetic (and defeated) that his question had caused offense, Morgan changed the subject after simply saying: “Point taken.” Piers isn’t the first person to upset Jenner. Earlier this year, she fought back against Jimmy Kimmel after the talk show host made jokes about her transition: Jenner has never been shy to defend the rights of trans people. “I try to be a positive role model,” the former athletic star says. “When you have a voice, and you have an opportunity at the world level to be able to speak, it has to be right.” Explaining the need for an understanding between trans people and the rest of society, Jenner explains: “Trans people deserve something vital; they deserve your respect. From that respect comes a more compassionate community.” However, Jenner has also come under fire for being absent during key moments in the trans movement. For example, her support of controversial US President Donald Trump has caused huge backlash for the star. Despite this, Jenner has been resolutely firm that she is “not a spokesperson for the trans community.”
“I am not a spokesperson for the trans community, I am not. The media kind of projects me as being the spokesperson, but from my standpoint, I am not. I am a spokesperson for my story, and that’s all I can say.”
